History

John’s competitive spirit was made obvious in High School. He lettered in football, basketball and track.

Attending undergraduate school at the University of Houston, he served as President of his Senior Class, Chairman of the Inter-Fraternal Counsel, President of his Fraternity, Sheriff of the University of Houston Frontier Fiesta and played on the U of H baseball team.

After graduating from the University of Houston, John volunteered for the Navy Flight Training Program and proudly served on active duty for three and one half years. Due to his proficiency in instrument flying, he was assigned to an all weather attack squadron which required carrier take offs and landings at night and in inclement weather. He served with the 6th Fleet Overseas.

Upon completion of the John’s active duty service as a Naval Aviator, he enrolled in the University of Houston Law School, but continued to fly with a Naval Reserve squadron based in New Orleans, Louisiana for a number of years.

After graduating from the University of Houston Law School and upon being licensed to practice law in Texas, John joined the firm of Banister & O’Toole, which was later named Banister, Boswell & O’Toole. The firm specialized in civil litigation. It was not uncommon for partners in the firm to try 15 to 20 jury cases each year. That trial experience proved invaluable for John.
